Ancient Aesthetics to Today: The Evolution of Cosmetic Dentistry

You’re not alone if you’re feeling self-conscious about dental flaws. Every year, millions of people worldwide spend billions of dollars on elective procedures intended to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence.

Today, cosmetic dental services are safe for most patients as long as they’re provided by a qualified dentist. They’re also considered minimally or non-invasive because there’s usually no need for needles and numbing. But these treatments haven’t always been as accurate and comfortable as they are today. Continue reading to learn more about how cosmetic dentistry evolved over time!

Ancient Aesthetics

Many people think of cosmetic dentistry as a relatively recent invention, but several ancient cultures left behind proof that they cared about the appearance of their smiles. For example, Egyptians are believed to have removed stains from their enamel using a toothpaste-like mixture made from pumice stone and vinegar, and ancient Romans went so far as to whiten their teeth with solutions that included urine because it contains ammonia, a powerful bleaching agent.

Archaeological evidence also shows that different cultures, such as the Etruscans, Egyptians, and others, used precious stones and materials like gold, jade, or seashells to fabricate replacement teeth. These were likely more cosmetic than functional because the human body rejects such materials, so they were probably unsuitable for biting and chewing.

Enlightened Advancements

The field of dentistry didn’t expand much until much later on. For example, during the Middle Ages (roughly 500 AD to 1500 AD), barbers who helped clients care for their appearance also helped maintain their smiles. They weren’t medically trained professionals but could file teeth down or apply acid to brighten them, though this would eventually wear down enamel and cause other oral issues.

It wasn’t until the 1700s, during the Age of Enlightenment, that new materials were tested to rebuild and replace missing teeth and improve a patient’s dental function and appearance. For example, porcelain dentures were developed using plaster molds of the individual’s mouth to look lifelike and fit more accurately.

Contemporary Cosmetics

Thanks to ongoing advancements in dental technology, materials, and techniques, cosmetic services today are more comfortable and accurate than ever before. Many dentists offer a variety of procedures to address different issues, such as stains, chips, cracks, misalignments, and even facial wrinkles, helping patients achieve their unique aesthetic goals and boost their self-esteem.

For instance, topical teeth whitening today can potentially brighten your grin by several shades in a single in-office visit without damaging your enamel as ancient solutions would.

If you’re frustrated by flaws in your smile but are unsure which treatments might help, you can learn more by scheduling a cosmetic consultation with your dentist!
